Tell The Truth - Or, At Least, Don't Lie

I am currently reading the book "12 Rules for Life" By Jordan B Peterson. The book is made of 12 chapters, each with their own rule to carry with you in life.

Chapter 8 in this book is called "Tell the truth - or, at least, don't lie", and it stands out as one of my favourites. That is why I wanted to write about it in a clear format.

The Core Message: Truth as a Foundation

Peterson states that truth is the foundation upon which a meaningful life is built. He argues that truth is not just a moral virtue, but a necessity for personal integrity and societal harmony. Telling the truth fosters trust, builds relationships, and provides a solid foundation for our thoughts and actions.

Telling the truth is important not only for building trust with others, but also to yourself.

The Consequences of Lying

The chapter also delves into the destructive nature of lies, both on an individual and collective level. Peterson illustrates how lies can accumulate, leading to a distorted reality that can collapse under its own weight. He uses historical examples and personal anecdotes to show that deceit can have devastating effects, eroding trust, and creating chaos and suffering.

The Psychological Impact of Deceit

One of the most compelling aspects of Peterson's argument is of the psychological toll that lying takes. He explains that when we lie, we fragment our psyche, leading to internal conflict and anxiety. Living in truth, on the other hand, aligns our inner and outer worlds, promoting psychological well-being and resilience. He describes the feeling we all have felt sometime, when telling a lie. And it's not a good one.

Practical Applications: Living Truthfully

Peterson doesn’t just theorize about truth; he offers practical advice on how to incorporate it into daily life. He suggests starting with small steps, such as refraining from saying things we know to be untrue, and gradually building the courage to express our true thoughts and feelings. This approach fosters authenticity and strengthens character.

The Challenge of Truth

Acknowledging that telling the truth can be difficult, Peterson emphasizes the importance of courage. Truth-telling often involves confronting uncomfortable realities and accepting personal responsibility. However, the long-term benefits of living authentically outweigh the short-term discomfort.

If your partner asks you how they look in their new outfit they spent an hour putting together, and you think it looks unappealing, telling truth is hard. It really does take courage. Yet, the short-term discomfort is minor compared to the potential chaos of deceit.

The Societal Implications

Peterson also explores the broader societal implications of truth and deceit. He explains that a society grounded in truth is more resilient, cohesive, and just. When people commit to honesty, they contribute to a culture of trust and mutual respect, which are essential for a functional and thriving community. So taking the truth in your own hands, means you are taking a stand to disregard lies and deceit in your current culture. And to replace lies with honesty will help build a stronger, better community.

Conclusion: A Commitment to Truth

Chapter 8 of "12 Rules for Life" is a compelling call to embrace truth in all aspects of our lives. Peterson’s insights challenge us to confront our fears and embrace honesty, not just as a moral obligation but as a practical strategy for a fulfilling and authentic life. By committing to truth, we can build stronger relationships, foster personal growth, and contribute to a more just and stable society. I have wanted to read 12 Rules for life for a while, and now im finally getting through it. As im not a native English speaker, it's a pretty hard book to fully understand. Even though I consider myself fluent in English, there are a lot of complicated words.

Still, I find it a good read when given time. Each chapter and "Rule for life" includes historical and personal stories that illustrates Petersons points in a understandable manner.
